Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – Deputies, EMS personnel, and firefighters were dispatched to a report of at least two being wounded by gunshots at the El Cheapo’s convenience store just north of the town of Gaston on Hwy. 321 south. The reports of this incident came in just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday night.
Deputies were first on the scene and the firefighters and EMTs arrived shortly after them. The EMS crew took over the care of two patients on the scene quickly and firefighters returned to their quarters within moments. The spokesman for the Lexington County Sheriff's Department said two people were injured, but those injuries were non-life-threatening. Both have been transported to the hospital.
This store has been a landmark in the area for decades. It is located in what’s known as “The Split”, an area where Hwy. 321 south divides into two distinct parts as travelers head toward Gaston and areas south of West Columbia.
Captain Adam Myrick of the Lexington Count Sheriff's Department says that they believe this was an isolated incident and there's now no danger to the public. He said the shooting appeared to stem from an argument between some people at the store. Eventually, that argument eroded into violence.
We will continue to follow this story and see what develops. We have requested more information from Captain Adam Myrick, the spokesman for Sheriff Koon. We will share that information as soon as it becomes available.
