Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) – An Irmo police officer pursued a car that fled a traffic stop at high speed down I-26 before terminating the chase when the car exited the interstate onto Huger Street. This all happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday. The officer pulled the car over at Broad River Road and North Royal Tower and it initially stopped. At some point, the driver decided he would flee instead of dealing with the officer. He dumped a bag while speeding away that officers are attempting to locate now.
In a matter of moments, the driver got onto I-26 and accelerated to speeds of over 100 mph. The officer who was pursuing was in constant contact with his supervisor, and because the traffic was light, he continued to chase the fleeing suspect. Once the vehicle made it to Huger Street in Columbia, the supervisor had the officer terminate the pursuit because of safety concerns. Columbia police officers are aware of the make and model of the car, and they are attempting to locate it.
Captain Courtney Dennis, spokesman for the Irmo Police Department, said that they know who the driver is, and they are getting warrants for the man. He will be charged with failure to stop for a blue light and may have more charges pending based on other factors.
