Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – An 18-year-old teen has been arrested after he hit a moped seriously injuring its rider and then fleeing the scene the day after Christmas in 2018. The victim’s father says that Jerod Mcaulay was taken into custody after the SCHP received a tip regarding the accident through Crimestoppers.
On December 26th, David Moye, 42, was struck while riding his moped on Busbee Road near Pasture Road just north of the town of Gaston. This happened just before daybreak. At that time, Mcaulay apparently stopped, realized what he had done, and then sped away. Since then, Moye has been in the hospital recovering from a traumatic brain injury. His father said recently that he is currently going through rehab to learn to walk and talk again, but is slowly recovering.
After receiving the tip, troopers located Mcaulay and were able to match paint samples and some glass or plastic on his vehicle with that of Moye’s moped. While searching the outside of his vehicle regarding the wreck, troopers noticed the smell of marijuana present. They obtained a search warrant for the vehicle's inside and located the weed in the passenger compartment. Mcauley was also charged with possession of that after troopers took him into custody.
Mcaulay faced a bond hearing on Saturday and has already been bonded out of jail.
