Batesburg-Leesville, S.C. – Several members of a check cashing ring have been arrested in Batesburg-Leesville this week.
Officers with the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department responded to the KJ’s IGA grocery on Thursday in reference to a counterfeit check. The officers made contact with the suspects who were in possession of numerous counterfeit and forged payroll checks from a local business. These checks were made out to the suspects in varying amounts. The suspects are not employed by the business.
The suspects were at KJ’s attempting to cash the forged checks. Those arrested in this incident are: Fuentes Brown, Brett Counts, Jermelle Furse, Kwantavia Jones, Darrell McDowell, Jamal Taylor and Reginald Young. All the suspects are from Georgia, although Young currently lives in Aiken, SC. Several of the suspects were also charged with a loaded handgun that was located in one of the suspect vehicles.
Bond was set on all defendants and they are currently being housed at the Lexington County Detention Center.
Chief Oswald said that he is “proud of the quick response of his officers. They saved the businesses in our community from thousands of dollars in lost revenue.”
