Gas leak in West Columbia Thursday causes the evacuation of several small businesses

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A natural gas line rupture near the intersection of 12th Street and Augusta Road (Hwy. 1) in the City of West Columbia Thursday forced the evacuation of several small businesses until the leak could be stopped. West Columbia police officers dealt with the evacuation, according to Assistant Chief Scott Morrison, while the fire department stood by for safety while the leaking line was cut off.

According to Chief Marquis Solomon of the West Columbia Fire Department, when they arrived a crew from SCE&G was already on the scene. That crew was able to quickly cut the gas flowing through the line and repair the place where the leak occurred. Business owners and employees were able to quickly return to work without much lost time.
