Irmo firefighters join Columbia Fire Department to fight blaze at Harbison apartment fire

Irmo. SC (Paul Kirby) – Firefighters from the Irmo Fire District joined the Columbia Fire Department to fight a blaze at the Harbison Garden Apartments off Columbiana Drive Saturday night. This is near the intersection of Crossbow Drive, not far from the mall. The fire was dispatched around 8:30 p.m. and Irmo went on their automatic aid agreement with the city.

When the first trucks arrived, they found smoke and flames pouring from a building that lit up the night sky. Commanders on the scene struck a second alarm at some point. This sends a predetermined amount of additional equipment and manpower to the fire. By the time the fire was out, the Columbia Fire Department said that about 38 people were displaced from their apartments.

Police officers completely closed Columbiana Drive as the firefighters worked. EMS crews were also on standby to ensure the safety of firefighters and civilians on the scene. Columbia Fire Department’s spokesman said that approximately 18 people were in the building when the fire broke out. No residents or firefighters were reported to have been seriously injured.
