Suspect in Irmo leads police on pursuit that ends with suspects in custody in Newberry County

April 9, 2019

Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) – Irmo police officers were led on a pursuit Monday afternoon after a suspect initiated the high-speed chase. Officers pursued the suspect out Broad River Road to I-26 west toward Chapin. Once the suspect got on the interstate, the driver accelerated, at times reaching speeds of almost 100 mph. The entire time, the lead officer in the pursuit was in contact with Irmo’s on-duty supervisor who was monitoring the safety and status of the whole chase. At about the 93 mm closing in on the Chapin exit, the officer lost sight of the fleeing suspect. At that point, the supervisor decided to call off the pursuit. Chapin officers had been notified of the fleeing suspect, but none were able to get out to the interstate in time to intercept.

Officers in Lexington County radioed ahead to agencies in Newberry County hoping they would get in front of the fleeing car. Prosperity police officers ran out to the interstate and arrived just in time to see the suspects’ vehicle exit at the road between the towns of Prosperity and Pomaria where there’s a Pilot Truck stop. The suspects abandoned their car there and tried to flee on foot. They were eventually apprehended by officers from several Newberry County agencies.

Irmo officers did respond to the scene where the suspects were in custody by the neighboring county’s officers. After consulting with them, it was determined that those officers had enough charges to warrant keeping the suspects, both reportedly from Greer, SC, in Newberry County. It is believed they will eventually be returned to the Irmo area to face charges as well.
