Suspect leads Cayce Public Safety officer on long pursuit after suspicious vehicle call

Cayce. SC (Paul Kirby) – An officer doing a regular property check found a suspicious vehicle behind a business during the overnight shift Saturday night that led to a long pursuit with a Cayce DPS officer. The suspect was sitting behind a building at Fish Hatchery Road and Fish Hatchery Lane in Cayce when the sharp-eyed officer noticed it, thought it looked out of place, and began to investigate.

Sgt. Evan Antley, spokesman for the Cayce Department of Public Safety, said that there were people in the vehicle and the driver took off when the officer’s cruiser pulled in. The suspect sped southwest, and the DPS officer began pursuing. At one point, the fleeing suspect lost control of the vehicle, dropped off the side of Busbee Road, and knocked down some road signs. The police officer thought the driver might call it quits but instead, the suspect regained control, continuing toward Gaston. Eventually, an officer with the Gaston PD joined in near that town, but the Cayce officer decided to discontinue the pursuit at the Orangeburg County line between Swansea and North. Antley said that officers assess the risk to the public, the officers, and the suspect against what crime has been committed when pursuing. In this case, it just wasn’t worth continuing. Antley did say the Cayce officer thought the suspect threw something from the car at one point, but after going back to that area and searching, they were unable to locate whatever it was.

Cayce’s investigation into what exactly was going on continues. They are also watching in case the vehicle and driver decide to come back through the city. Antley said that the Cayce Department of Public Safety wants to thank the Gaston Police Department for their assistance.
