Lexington County residents with criminal history invited to join others for Job Fair especially for them

May 10, 2019

Columbia, SC – Lexington County residents who have a criminal conviction in their past are invited to join others from across SC for a special Job Fair. This event is meant to assist people with criminal convictions in their background and other hiring challenges. It will be held Wednesday, May 15 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Dutch Square Mall, located at 421 Bush River Road in Columbia, SC.

The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services will team up with other agencies like SC Works, SC Vocational Rehabilitation, the SC Department of Social Services, the US Probation Office, and even the US Attorney’s Office to sponsor and promote this event. It is the perfect opportunity for people who have had problems in their past that might be struggling with finding a job because of that history.

The fair and expo will include area employers and other organizations who participate with and provide resources for citizens who are returning to the workplace or society after being out of a job for some time. Whatever the reason, those who have been out of work during an incarceration, personal or family obligations, an illness, or any other reason will have an opportunity to see potential employers. Employers in retail, services, construction, manufacturing and other areas will be represented. The employers have agreed ahead of time to consider persons who must “check the box” regarding prior criminal convictions on their employment applications.

“This is a great way for people having a hard time finding a job because they have a conviction, or have been out of the work force for whatever reason, to meet employers willing to consider them,” said George Whitehead, a program coordinator for the SC Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.

“At previous Job Fairs, we have had people interviewed and even hired on the spot,” noted Whitehead.

Professional dress is required. Discounted SLED criminal background checks will be provided on site. The event will also feature workshops on how to seek expungements and pardons of prior criminal convictions.
