SLED confirms they are investigating allegations of missing funds from Boot Drive

May 13, 2019

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Thom Berry, spokesman for the SC Law Enforcement Division, said Monday that SLED is looking into allegations that there may be some financial improprieties involving a Lexington County Fire Service Boot Drive. Boot Drives are a tradition where firefighters normally stand at a local intersection and collect money by allowing drivers and their vehicle’s passengers to drop cash into a fire boot. That money is then compiled, counted, and donated to a specific charity. Berry concluded his statement by saying, “Our work on the matter is still underway.”

It is standard operating procedure for Lexington County to refer any allegations against their employees to an agency that is not affiliated with Lexington County. This would also include the SC Highway Patrol investigating an accident involving a Lexington County vehicle as an example. This policy prevents any perception that an investigation may be tainted by any interagency favoritism and ensures an unbiased final report.

We have requested comment from Lexington County’s administration. We will update this story as we receive that or more information.
