South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Run-Ella-Run Memorial 5K is scheduled to be run this Saturday in the Town of South Congaree. According to South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert, his department will begin closing the roads at 7:15 a.m. and the race will start at 7:30 a.m. on Oak Street at the Rodeo Arena.
The race is run in memory of Gabriella “Ella” Shumate. The event’s website describes her as a child that was an exuberant, precocious four-year old who instantly stole hearts with crystal blue-green eyes and her vivacious princess spirit. She expected all to pay attention to her and attended to all, making everyone her friend. Her life was tragically taken on Monday, May 16, 2011. Ella was riding home with her father in South Congaree when the car they were in was hit head on by a drunk driver. The collision killed Ella and left her father critically injured.
Since her death, the Run Ella Run Memorial 5K, a running/walking event, has raised funds for the Gabriella Shumate Memorial Foundation. This is a non-profit organization created for the purpose of bringing happiness to children. They are also committed to promoting safe driving and the prevention of unnecessary deaths.
Chief Shumpert said that motorists can expect delays Saturday for about an hour. Main Street will be closed and detouring on Fish Hatchery or Platt Springs Roads is recommended. Other streets or roads that will be at least partial closures include Ramblin Road, Daniel Drive, Church Street, Colonial Drive, Pine Street, and Sunset Drive. The race route is attached to this article for convenience.
