Truck on truck accident in South Congaree spills fluids, requires haz-mat response
South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer truck hit a dump truck at the intersection of Pine and Main Street in the town of South Congaree Wednesday morning. The crash blocked the intersection for more than an hour until the mess could be dealt with by police officers and first responders.
Someone walked into the town hall just after 9:00 a.m. and personally reported the wreck to Chief Shumpert. Officer Matthews of the South Congaree Police Department quickly arrived on scene and reported the intersection of the Ramblin Rd. side of Pine was completely closed. The Lexington County Fire Service responded with Ladder 5, special Hazardous Material vehicles, and firefighters and haz-mat technicians after fluids from one truck began leaking onto the road. Eventually the leak was stopped, and heavy wreckers arrived to move the large trucks out of the road. It took more than an hour for the wreck to be cleared away so that traffic could flow freely again.
According to South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert, the driver of the dump truck has been charged with making an unlawful lane change. He is also being charged with a vehicle tag violation.
