Cayce officers arrest habitual offender after short vehicle pursuit early Sunday
Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Cayce Department of Public Safety arrested a habitual offender early Sunday after a brief vehicle and foot pursuit. Robert L. Gillespie, 39, was arrested on a litany of charges after he was taken into custody in the Three Fountains area of the county.
A Cayce DPS officer tried to pull Gillespie over near the airport in the early morning hours of Sunday. Gillespie refused to pull over for the officer and initiated a pursuit. The roads had little traffic, so the officer continued pursuing on John Hardee Expressway through the middle of the airport to Platt Springs Road. Another patrol car joined in and began calling the pursuit so the lead officer could concentrate on driving. Gillespie at one time accelerated to triple digit speeds headed toward Three Fountains. The fleeing driver turned right on Emmanuel Church Road, circled through the Hunters Mill neighborhood, and eventually stopped at the dead-end of Villas Court. There, Gillespie still tried to flee on foot. Cayce officers ran him down and quickly took him into custody.
Gillespie has been booked into the Lexington County Detention Center on multiple charges. They included Driving Under the Influence 1st, Sale or Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Failure to Stop for a Blue Light, Failure to Obey a Public Safety Officer, Endangering Emergency Service Personnel, Driving Under Suspension, and being a Habitual Traffic Offender. A judge set bonds totaling $21,512 Sunday morning. Gillespie was still in the detention center Sunday afternoon.
