Fuel spill in Gaston requires police to close street

September 26, 2019

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer truck that locked its brakes at Mack and Main Street in Gaston, damaged its fuel tanks spilling diesel fuel in the road Thursday morning. Gaston police officers were first on the scene and when they saw the fuel leaking, they requested the fire service. The Police Department also was forced to close Mack Street.

According to Major Stephen Watkins of the Gaston Police Department, when the truck skidded to a stop, a portion of its load came loose, slid forward, and punctured the truck’s fuel tank. Watkins said that Carolina Fleet Services, a heavy truck repair and recovery company located in Gaston, came to the scene and pumped the diesel fuel from the truck’s ruptured tanks.

Eventually a contractor cleaned up the spill and had the truck towed. Watkins did not say why the truck stopped so abruptly or if anyone was charged. He said the road was fully reopened around 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
