Man gives up after second guessing his decision to flee Gaston police

September 27, 2019

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A man that at first failed to yield when Gaston Police Department’s Major Stephen Watkins attempted to pull him over Thursday, changed his mind after seeing the grill of the jet-black Police Pursuit Charger in his rearview mirror. In the short time the chase was on, the man never even began pulling away from Major Watkins!

Watkins said he was patrolling the town when he noticed the suspect had made a moving violation with the vehicle. When Watkins activated his warning devices, instead of pulling over, the man sped away. The pursuit travelled down Irvin Jumper Road and over toward Mack Street. It didn’t take the fleeing driver long to realize he didn’t have a chance of escaping the menacing looking patrol car with an expert driver behind the wheel. Not long after the pursuit began the man pulled to the side of the road, stopped, and presented his hands, surrendering to the police.

Watkins said that the suspect told him he was scared when he saw his blue lights in his rearview mirror. He had no driver’s license and was holding a small amount of weed. “Because he gave up so quickly, we didn’t arrest the man,” Watkins said. “He’s been charged with operating with no driver’s license, reckless driving, and simple possession. We had his car towed and he received citations to appear in court later date.
