Completion of construction on new Gilbert’s ballfield now on the horizon

October 5, 2019

Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) – The final phase of construction on the new Lexington County Recreation Commission’s ballfields near Gilbert is just about to begin. Most of the fields and structures have been completed for some time but an unexpected holdup with the electrical service has had the entire project stopped while those issues were worked out.

According to Randy Gibson, executive director of the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission, the project was a delayed by Dominion Energy, the primary utility provider. The company needed to install three phase power at the site and that took some time on their part.  Three phase power is normally used in commercial buildings that require more electricity for things like the lights on the fields, commercial heating and air systems, or cooking equipment in the canteen. “The power is finally in and the buildings are completed.  The grassing contractor had to begin work on another project because of the delay in getting power,” Gibson said. “The grassing will begin as soon as the sub-contractor finishes his current grassing/landscaping project.” Gibson said he regretted the delay but the commission's hands were tied by Dominion and their past problems.

Gibson said the general contractor is still waiting to pave the parking lot. This will be one of the last things done. That won’t happen until all other work is completed that may require the use of any heavy equipment.  The weight of these machines, and whether they use tracks or tires, must be taken into consideration. When the large equipment traverses new pavement or dressed ground, it can quickly damage both.

If no other unforeseen problems crop up, Gibson said that he hopes that the project will be fully completed soon.
