Samaria, SC (Paul Kirby) – Detectives with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department are in the very early stages of an investigation into a shooting near Samaria and Batesburg-Leesville. Deputies, EMTs, and firefighters were dispatched to the call around 2:00 a.m. Monday on Promenade Road just southwest of the town.
After being dispatched, EMTs and firefighters stood by away from the scene a short time while deputies ensured it was safe for them to proceed in. This is standard operating procedure. When the medically trained personnel arrived, those responders reported they had encountered at least one person with a gunshot wound in his chest.
A medical helicopter was requested and did respond to the I-20 entrance ramp at US Hwy. 178. As the ground ambulance was between the scene of the shooting and the landing zone, the driver was told to pull over. More medically trained personnel evaluated and treated ther patient roadside before they all relocated to the parking area of the Samaria fire station. No one has released the patient’s condition or any further details.
Investigators will continue to work the scene throughout the morning to establish if a crime was committed and if so, who fired the shot that injured the man. We will add updates as we receive more information.
