Swansea voters reelect one councilmember, elect citizen’s watchdog Simmons to council after rejecting run by former mayor

November 6, 2019

Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Town of Swansea showed their love for Town Councilmember Michael Luongo in District 3 at the polls Tuesday, giving him a second term on the council. First, he was unopposed, a sign the voters were happy with his work. Secondly, there were no write-in ballots cast in the race. Even unopposed, Luongo received 13-votes for reelection Tuesday.

In council District 4, the voters rejected former Mayor Ray Spires who was running for a council seat. He was opposed by businesswoman Doris Simmons, another political pro who has served in an elected position. She currently holds a seat on School District Four’s Board of Trustees. She will need to resign that seat to serve the town due to South Carolina’s Dual Office laws.

Simmons has regularly followed town politics and was a frequent critic of Spires when he was the mayor. She has been an advocate for transparency and has said that more financial storm clouds are brewing over the southern Lexington County town. She will join Luongo in pushing for the council to be more open with their actions and their finances. As a trained accountant, she certainly has the experience needed to closely examine the actions of the council, especially regarding their spending.
