West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – Two pedestrians have died after being struck by vehicles on Sunset Boulevard near 9th Street close to Graybar Supply Thursday evening. Police and firefighters responded to assist the EMS crew, handle an extrication and to handle the traffic. This is a very busy road that commuters coming out of Columbia often use to travel west toward Lexington.
The call was received sometime around 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening. The official sunset time was 5:26 p.m. making it dark as the evening commute was slowly coming to an end. For the safety of all involved, police closed Sunset Boulevard between 9th Street and Jarvis Klapman Boulevard for several hours. It was reopened only after Lexington County Coroner Margret Fisher’s team completed their investigation and everything was removed from the roadway.
Reports from the scene indicated that one of the victims was trapped underneath a vehicle when emergency responders arrived. As crews checked the other person that was struck, they realized both had passed on the scene.
The names of the two killed have not been released by Coroner Fisher’s Office. Those will be released after the descendants’ next of kin is notified. The West Columbia Police Department will release the cause of the deadly crash only after they complete a thorough investigation into the accident.
