Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Officers and detectives from the Town of Lexington Police Department are in the very early stages of an investigation into a break-in at the Best Buy off Sunset Boulevard. An officer was dispatched to an alarm at the store and found a door had been breached sometime around 5:00 a.m. Friday.
After the discovery of the break-in, more Lexington police officers gathered quickly to secure the store and clear the building. They did not locate any suspects still inside.
In short order, officers were working with store management to review video in hopes the suspects could be identified. Best Buy also has a corporate security department that monitors their stores remotely. Police were communicating with them to see if they could also be of help.
This appears to be a smash and dash robbery. In cases like this, the suspects smash the glass store front or pry open a door, dash in, grab items of value they may have already identified in the business, and then flee within seconds. Because the building’s alarm did activate, it made the thieves’ getaway more urgent. It’s not known if they were even able to grab anything at all before dashing out.
Lexington officers did have their dispatch notify other agencies in the Midlands that have Best Buy stores and other big box retailers. This was done in case the burglars were targeting that chain or type of store.
At this point in the investigation, there is no information to release. Lexington PD’s Public Information Officer Corporal Cameron Mortenson did say he may have more to share on this later today. We will update this story as additional information becomes available.
