Church members complete Active Shooter Training in South Congaree

November 27, 2019

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – The South Congaree Police Department recently sent Detective D. Washington to a course at the SC Criminal Justice Academy to learn to teach the Active Shooter Training Course. It is meant to prepare civilians and others awareness and how to react to this growing threat. Citizens of all walks of life can then take the course and at some point, may be able to teach others in their groups and communities.

The first place that Detective Washington taught the course was at the Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church in the town. Ten members of the church attended. They were all taught the fundamentals of how to be aware of a potential active shooter in their midst. They also learned how to respond to a tragic action like this if it were to happen.

Detective Washington said during a recent town council meeting that this is a very flexible course. It can be as short as two hours, and as long as eight. This is based on the time the class members have and how in depth they’d like to go. It is available for churches, school’s staff, and others who are interested in increasing their awareness of their surroundings. That is key to stopping these sorts of attacks.

The students of the first class were: Billy Stukie, Greg Bonnette, James Goodwin, Ward Shumpert, Gene Henderson, Jerry Henderson, Tina Rish, Debra Harwell, Terry Harwell, and Michael Brown.

Each received an attractive certificate in a frame to keep and display. If you would like to know more about how you and your group can participate, call Detective Washington at (803) 755-2760 and press the Police Department prompt.
