Batesburg-Leesville, SC (Paul Kirby) – Firefighters from Batesburg-Leesville and Lexington County came together Wednesday night to fight a fire in the 500 block of Buck Smith Road. This is a short road off Pond Branch between I-20 and Batesburg-Leesville.
The call was dispatched just before 7:30 p.m. and the first equipment on the scene reported a small block home well involved in fire on arrival. Firefighters began to pull their hoses to advance on the flames while other officers assisted with firefighter safety and establishing a water supply. The closest fire hydrants were some distance away and water had to be brought in by tanker trucks.
The teams quickly knocked the fire down, but the home was burning so intensely when firefighters arrived that it had already been destroyed. They brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes, but it took them a great deal more time go through everything making sure it was all out and safe.
The cause of the fire has not been released. The home is considered a total loss.
