Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A young man in his 20s was shot near Swansea Friday night. He was transported to a local medical facility with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting happened on Huckabee Mill Road near the intersection of Faith Church Road.
Details are few at this point. When Lexington County law enforcement and first responders received the call, deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington County EMS, and the fire service responded. The EMTs and firefighters stood by away from the scene until deputies could arrive and secure the area to ensure the safety of the medically trained personnel.
At some point, a deputy did use his department issued tourniquet to slow the bleeding of the victim’s wound until ambulance crews and first responders arrived. Deputies were given these and trained in there use a few years ago. This young man was believed to have been shot in an upper extremity.
Since the tourniquets were issued, deputies have saved lives with them. In a case near Gaston, a department K-9 bit a suspect who led law enforcement on a high-speed chase before crashing a stolen vehicle he was driving. He fled into a wooded area on foot after refusing the lawful commands of multiple deputies and officers to stop fleeing. A LCSD K-9 caught up with him and took him down as he ran. The man’s bicep was bleeding profusely, and a deputy applied his tourniquet before medical personnel arrived. This was believed to have had a part in saving the man’s life.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has not released any information on exactly what happened Friday night. They also haven’t released any details of how the young man received his wound. We hope to have more information if it becomes available from the Sheriff’s Department.
