South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home was damaged by fire in South Congaree Sunday afternoon. The call was received just before 1:00 p.m. in the 100 block of Dusty Lane just off Pine Street.
This home is just over one mile from the county’s South Congaree Fire Station and those trucks and equipment were on the scene very quickly. The first arriving officer from the fire service reported that the home was well involved when his crew pulled up. That team set up for fire attack as the second piece of equipment established the water supply.
Although there are some fire hydrants on Pine Street, the closest one was still a good distance away. The incident commander decided to nurse the water off other trucks that were arriving. Those pieces of equipment were needed for their manpower, not their equipment or hoses. Rather than drop a large supply hose a long distance back to the hydrant, they just nursed water off the other apparatus pulling in.
The crew from Engine 5 out of South Congaree had a quick knock down on the fire as more trucks and manpower arrived on the scene. Even though the fire was marked under control in about 30 minutes, the home still had significant damage because it apparently had been burning long enough that it had grown significantly in size before it was reported.
Mid-Carolina Co-Op responded to disconnect the electricity from the home. The American Red Cross was also notified to assist the family that was displaced.
The fire crews quickly transitioned to a phase where they were looking for hotspots and trying to find any remnants of the fire inside and underneath the home. Fire crews were still on scene after 2:00 p.m. putting out any fire extensions and salvaging what they could.
