Firefighters battle house fire near Columbia Airport early Monday

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County firefighters and personnel from Lexington County EMS responded to a house fire near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport early Monday. The home is in the Cedarwood Subdivision on Cherrywood Circle. The fire was reported just before 1:00 a.m. Firefighters from a number of stations in that region of the county responded to the fire in the small subdivision close to Southland Memorial Gardens.

When they arrived, the first fire officer reported a “working fire.” This is a term used when it’s obvious the fire has a good start and is intensifying. These require a great deal of “work” to put out. Fire was pushing out of one end and the flames lit up the entire area around the home.

Firefighters quickly attacked; however, the home was already heavily damaged by the fire. The County firefighters did a good job knocking the fire down from the exterior before moving inside to finisg extinguishing the fire. Still, the home is uninhabitable in its present condition. The electrical service has also been disconnected. the family that was displaced is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. We will update this story if we receive more information.
