South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – The management of Highway 55 Café, a restaurant based on an old-style burger joint from the 1950s that’s located in Red Bank off South Lake Drive, has been feeding kids recently around southern Lexington County with a simple bag lunch. They’ve done this several times in Pelion and next week, they’ll do it all again in South Congaree at the town hall. According to Matt Davis, one of the members of the team that’s helping. Davis said, "To all of us, it’s just a way of giving back."
Davis said recently, “We’re just trying to keep these kids fed man.” They’ve built a great team that includes Sgt. Clint Alma of the SC National Guard, some of the staff and management of County Towing, and the Highway 55 folks who put the simple bag lunches together. Davis said next Tuesday, April 14th, starting at 11:00 a.m., parents, guardians, or children’s caregivers will able to drive-thru and get a bag for every child in their car in South Congaree. There will be several hundred bags available.
The bag lunches are simple. They have a sandwich and a few other things in the them. “It’s nothing fancy,” Davis said. “It’s enough for a good meal. People are certainly able to drive by and let the kids get out the house, even if they are just riding in the car.” Currently, the governor’s order allows you to drive back and forth to work and go for necessities such as food or a prepared meal.
The South Congaree Town Hall is located at 119 West Berry Road in West Columbia. They’ll start handing out meals at 11:00 a.m. and continue until 2:00 p.m. or all the meals are gone. Social distancing will be in practice.
