Suspect causes serious collision while fleeing the scene of a hit & run in the Irmo area Thursday evening

May 15, 2020

Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) – The driver of a vehicle that had been involved in a hit & run collision at an Irmo business, fled the scene of that wreck only to cause a much more serious three car pileup just outside Irmo’s town limits. This occurred on St. Andrews Road Thursday evening at approximately 7:00 p.m.

The hit and run collision happened at the Kroger on St. Andrews Road at Lake Murray Boulevard. One of the drivers involved in that collision did not stop but instead fled at a high rate of speed toward Irmo High School. An Irmo police officer measured his speed at approximately 90 mph on busy St. Andrews Road just before the second collision occurred.

When the suspect’s car crossed the Town’s boundaries into Lexington County, he caused another collision that involved two other vehicles. His car was seriously damaged and a pickup truck he hit was overturned.  This happened at Crossroad Intermediate School. One of the other two vehicles was propelled over to the gravel bed of the CXS railroad tracks there. The fleeing suspect was injured in that collision. Several occupants from the other vehicles he involved also needed medical attention.

The Irmo police officer who measured the suspect’s speed in the town arrived moments after the crash. She immediately called for assistance, and IPD officers responded. The Irmo Fire District and Lexington County EMS were also dispatched. The SC Highway Patrol was notified because the wreck happened just outside the town’s jurisdiction. Another IPD officer responded to the Kroger to begin investigating the hit & run the man originally fled.

The one person who was seriously injured in the wreck was unconscious on scene according to that first IPD officer to arrive. She checked all involved and rendered what care she could until the EMS crew and firefighters arrived.

The current condition of the suspect and  the others injured in this collision is not available due to privacy laws. The SCHP has not indicated what charges the fleeing man may face.
