Tractor trailer truck flips on entrance ramp to I-26 at the 129-mile markers

Sandy Run, SC (Paul Kirby) - A tractor trailer truck flipped onto its side early Thursday morning on the west entrance ramp to I-26 at the 129-mile marker. This is in the Sandy Run portion of the county where Hwy. 21 crosses over the interstate.

The call was dispatched to both Lexington County’s Fire and EMS services just after 3:00 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2020. The accident was reported to the county’s 911 Communication’s Center by a sheriff’s deputy.

While enroute, a Lexington County Fire Service battalion chief requested that Calhoun County’s Station 31, the Sandy Run Fire Department, also respond. That station is very close to the interstate in that portion of the Horses’ Neck community and their personnel were first on scene. Their officer began to establish an Incident Command System and reported additional information to the Lexington County supervisors responding.

The fire service already had multiple pieces of its equipment and manpower on I-26 west at the scene of what the SDPS said was a large vehicle fire. According to the SCDPS’ system, that incident had at least a portion of the roadway blocked near the 116-mile marker. That incident was reported closer to 2:00 a.m. Much of the equipment that responded to the truck wreck at the 129-ramp responded from there.

When units arrived at the ramp on Exit 129, they did find a truck laying on its side. After assessing that scene, most of Lexington County’s equipment left quickly with just a small amount of resources left on the scene awaiting the arrival of the SCHP out of Orangeburg. A heavy wrecker was being dispatched around 4:00 a.m. to right the truck and tow it away.

The SCHP has not said if the ramp was cleared as of 5:00 a.m. Thursday. We have contacted them and will try and update with more information as we receive it.
