Dixiana, SC (Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer caught fire and burned on I-26 west near the 116-mile marker very early Thursday morning. The SCHP reported it via their public AutoCAD system around 2:00 a.m. on June 25, 2020. The 116-mile marker is between Charleston Highway (Hwy. 321) and the 119 exits where Hwy. 21 crosses over the interstate near Rolling Meadows mobile home park
A number of fire service trucks and other resources were dispatched out of multiple Lexington County stations to fight the fire. There was equipment and manpower out of the station in the Lexington County Industrial Park near Dixiana, South Congaree, Gaston, Pine Grove, and others all working together to extinguish the burning truck. The SCDPS listed the interstate as blocked for some time during this incident.
It took over an hour to fully extinguish the fire so that fire trucks and their manpower could be released from the scene. Some of the equipment, manpower, and a supervisor from this fire responded straight to the overturned tractor trailer at the west entrance ramp to I-26 at the 129-mile marker around 3:00 a.m.
The SCDPS AutoCAD system showed that the remains of the truck fire were still around the 116-mile marker west at 5:30 a.m. We have paged the on-call spokesman for the SCHP to see if the remnants from the fire were affecting the flow of traffic in any way. At this point, we have not heard back.
