South Congaree police officers arrest man after investigation into criminal sexual conduct with a ju

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) - The South Congaree Police Department arrested Michael Dyer, 48, of South Congaree, SC on Friday, July 10, 2020, after an investigation into criminal sexual conduct allegations. Their investigation revealed that Dyer had committed sexual offenses against a minor.

Dyer was charged Friday with five counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st Degree with a minor under 11 years of age. He also has been accused and charged with five counts of Disseminating Obscene Material to a Minor as well as several other charges related to this case, according to South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert.

Chief Shumpert said Friday that he grew up in the South Congaree community and he and his wife are raising their children there. “I take all crimes against the people in this community personally. This is where I grew up and where I started my career. The people here are all my family and all our officers care deeply about the well being of the residents of our town. Anyone who thinks they can come into this community and commit crimes against our family, our community, our children, should seriously reconsider that. We will not tolerate it and will bring the full force of all laws that apply to bear if they do things that harm our citizens, neighbor, or their guest.”

Dyer has been booked into the Lexington County Detention Center where he is expected to face a judge for a bond hearing sometime in the future. Until that hearing, he will be kept in the County’s Detention Center.

Friday, South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert said, “We sincerely hope and pray that the victim and their family can begin to heal from this incident and that justice will be served.” The department will assign the family a victims's advocate to help guide them through the legal and healing process.

Shumpert and his staff have made several cases like this over the last several years and has made it clear that no crime, but most importantly crimes against children will not be tolerated in the town
