Biker in fatal felony DUI crash identified, suspect denied bond

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the motorcyclist who died early Sunday morning after the Harley Davidson he was riding was struck by another vehicle on the I-20 westbound near exit 39. Fisher said that the fatal collision occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on September 6, 2020.

According to Coroner Fisher, Jeremy Shane Smith, 49, of Aiken was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained. Fisher said that Smith was wearing a helmet when the crash happened.

According to the SC Highway Patrol, Smith was driving west toward Aiken on a Harley Davidson motorcycle when he was struck from behind by a Ford Mustang. That car was being driven by 28-year-old DeAngelo Cunningham.

The SCHP has since charged Cunningham with felony DUI and leaving the scene of a collision involving death. He was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center where he faced a judge Sunday who denied him bond in the case.

The incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
