Sandy Run, SC 12/24/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A double-wide mobile home was destroyed by fire in the 200 block of Bub Wise Road in the Horse’s Neck community of Lexington County Friday morning. After Lexington County’s Emergency Communications Center received the first call regarding the fire, multiple callers dialed 911 and reported that the home was burning down.
Because of the rural area where the home was located off any major roads, this fire got a strong head start on the responding firefighters. Though Lexington County has fire stations that are manned 24-hours a day across even the most rural areas, by the time the first crew from the Sandy Run Station arrived, this home was, “on the ground,” because of the blaze.
As is the case in most of the very rural areas of Lexington County, there are limited or no fire hydrants in proximity to this area. That requires the fire service dispatch extra trucks and manpower to carry water in to fight the blaze. In some cases, firetrucks with multiple personnel riding aboard can stop at stations that already have their engine and manpower committed on the scene. The next truck can let a driver off at the now empty station and this operator can bring that station’s tanker truck while the remaining engine crew continues responding. It’s one of the most efficient way to get the extra water truck on the road enroute to the fire.
Eventually, enough manpower and water arrived on the scene to “surround and drown” the burning home. It was a total loss. No information was available at the time of printing regarding the cause of the fire.
