Lexington County, SC 07/19/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A group of committed organizers are now working on taking a very special group of veterans on a once in a lifetime trip. The Korean War Veterans of this area, working with others who served in that war all over the world, have raised the money necessary to finish the Korean War Wall of Remembrance. Now, as a thank you for their fundraising efforts and in honor of their service, the Upstate’s Honor Flight is flying Korean War Veterans from all over South Carolina to Washington, D.C. for a special dedication of that wall on July 27, 2021.
South Carolina’s Korean War Veterans, as well as civilians or the families of veterans who have passed on, raised $200,000 in South Carolina for this effort. They did so in honor of the 576 South Carolinians who were either Killed in Action or listed as Prisoners of War during the period of the Korean War.

While contributions are still being received and are appreciated, donating is not a requirement for a veteran to be included on this Honors Flight. In fact, the organizer wants everyone to know that even if a veteran has already been on an Honor Flight before, they are still eligible to go on this flight.
According to retired SC Senator Lewis Vaughn, their veterans’ group really has no idea how many Korean War Veterans live in SC. If they have not been active in one of the retirees’ groups, they aren’t on any mailing list and there’s really no good way to reach them, “These men deserve the opportunity to finally get some recognition,” Vaughn said in a recent email. That’s why he is depending on family, friends, and neighbors to help seek these men out and get them on his ever-growing list.
If you are or know a veteran of the Korean War, please contact Lewis Vaughn, SC Senator Retired, by email at lvaughn1146@gmail.com. If you’d like to still make a donation or get a Korean Veteran’s name on the list but do not use email, simply use the US Mail and send those to KWV, 623 Ashley Commons Court, Greer, SC 29651.
