Sharpe’s Hill, SC 08/04/2021 (Paul Kirby) – Firefighters from across southern and western Lexington County battled a house fire in the Sharpe’s Hill community Tuesday afternoon. The fire, which was reported around 4:40 p.m., was on Sems Road close to its intersection with Mimosa Road north of the towns of Swansea and Gaston. This is in proximity to The Store gas and convenience store on SC Hwy. 6.
First arriving firefighters reported they encountered a two-story residential structure burning when they pulled in. Because there were no fire hydrants in the immediate vicinity of the burning house, the call was quickly made to set up a rural water supply operation. This required additional trucks and manpower be dispatched to haul water in tankers from the closest water source to the burning home.
The senior firefighter on the scene immediately requested that Dominion Energy be notified so that they could respond and disconnect the home’s power. This is normally necessary to alleviate electrical hazards that are created by the fire impinging on the structure’s electrical wiring.
Crews searched the home to ensure that no one was trapped inside as other firefighters began attacking the blaze. During the height of the fire, a crew from Lexington County EMS stood by in case someone was injured or overcome by the high heat and humidity. Deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene assisting with the traffic caused by the large number of firetrucks that were there.
Firefighters were able to overcome all obstacles and provide enough water and trained manpower to eventually bring the blaze under control. Lexington County has not reported any injuries as a result of the fire. They have not released the cause, or an estimated monetary value of the damage done to the home by the fire.
