Gaston, SC 07/05/2023 (Paul Kirby) – A blaze that was originally dispatched as a structure fire was reported at approximately 1:50 a.m. Wednesday morning. This fire was in the 4200 block of Fish Hatchery Road near Suzanne Court between Gaston and Sharpe’s Hill. When the first arriving truck pulled into the scene, that crew reported that the structure that was burning was an outbuilding that was well involved in flames and threatening a mobile home on the property as well.
Because of a lack of fire hydrants in proximity to the emergency scene, additional equipment comprised of mostly water tanker trucks, were dispatched to this blaze. Eventually manpower and equipment from Sharpe’s Hill, Gaston, Edmund, Pelion, Swansea, Pine Grove, Red Bank, and several other Lexington County fire stations were dispatched. Other crews were also required to handle standby assignments at empty stations in areas that were left empty because their resources were committed at the Fish Hatchery Road call.
Once the necessary crews and equipment were on scene and in place, it didn’t take the combined teams long to bring the fire under control. A fire marshal was notified and responded to help determine the cause of the fire. The outbuilding was a complete loss, but the home was not damaged to the point that it was rendered completely uninhabitable.
