Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) - A pedestrian who was crossing Hwy 321 south near Busbee Road has died after being struck by a vehicle Sunday night. The collision occurred just after 6:00 p.m. on November the 1st, 2020.
According to Corporal Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a pedestrian was attempting to cross the busy highway Sunday evening in Gaston. Collins said that the driver of a Nissan was traveling north toward Columbia when that vehicle struck the pedestrian. The individual that was hit died at the scene as a result of their injuries.
This collision happened about 30 minutes after the sun had set Sunday evening. Saturday, the last day of October, the sun did not set until 6:31 p.m. and there would have been better light at the time of the deadly crash. Because daylight savings time began at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, the darker driving conditions could certainly have made a pedestrian crossing the highway less visible to a motorist.
Corporal Collins said in a statement released Sunday night that the SCHP did not expect to file any charges in the deadly collision.
