Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – The SC Department of Transportation announced this week that they had reopened the overpass to I-20 at Cedarcrest Drive. It had been closed since September 20 when a tractor trailer truck ran off the side of I-20, struck one of the bridge’s support columns, and burst into flames. The driver of that truck was killed in the accident.
The subsequent spalling of the concrete supports from the heat damaged the bridge to such an extent that the SCDOT engineers felt it best to close the bridge until repairs could be made. Within a few days, engineers had formulated a plan to repair the bridges column but while the crews were performing the repair, Cedarcrest Drive had to be closed.
The SCDOT said Wednesday that their staff, its contractors, and state, county, and industry partners worked hard together to complete this “quick response” emergency repair in only 23 days. This allowed this bridge to return to service so that the motoring public experienced the least possible inconvenience.
