Two camper homes burn at Acapulco USA on shore of Lake Murray

Leesville, SC (Paul Kirby) – Two campers were destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon at the Acapulco USA campground and marina on the banks of Lake Murray near the Saluda County line out of Leesville. The fire, first reported as a mobile home fire and later a vehicle fire, turned out to a camper fire that had spread to another at the popular campground that has been a fixture on that area of the lake for years. The calls came in about the fire at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire service was able to put the fire out quickly with trucks and manpower from several stations in the area. The county was assisted by a tanker truck that hauls water that responded out of Batesburg-Leesville. According to several other residents of the campground, one resident's dogs died in the blaze. The situation could have been much worse given that the campers’ spaces are often full and are very close together.

The fire was reported out just after 6:00 p.m. but firefighters stayed on the scene some time after to mop up and do overhaul. They haven’t said what caused the fire.
