Dollar General tractor trailer catches fire early Thursday morning near Cayce

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – A Dollar General store’s tractor trailer truck was heavily damaged after it caught fire early Thursday morning. The fire was on I-26 between the 113 and 114 mile markers eastbound. The burning truck was reported after midnight and it required the cooperation of three fire departments to extinguish.

Firefighters and equipment responded from Lexington County, the Cayce Department of Public Safety, and the West Columbia Fire Department. They found the truck burning near the Old Dunbar Road overpass on the shoulder of the interstate. Fire commanders closed two eastbound lanes of traffic for a short while as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

The fire departments received assistance from several law enforcement agencies including the SC Highway Patrol. Officers helped with the lane closure while the firefighters were on the interstate working. An ambulance from Lexington County’s EMS was on standby to provide medical care for anyone that might have been injured while teams were working to extinguish the fire.

Once the fire was out, the scene was left in the hands of troopers with the SCHP. They will oversee the investigation into what happened. All lanes of I-26 were flowing freely as of 4:00 a.m. Thursday.
