Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – A double-wide mobile home was destroyed by fire in the Pelion area of the county early Wednesday morning. The fire, reported around 1:45 a.m., was in the 200 block of Nancy Road off Scrub Oak close to Florence Baptist Church northeast of Pelion’s town limits.
When the first firefighters arrived, they reported that the home was approximately 75 percent involved in fire. As they were doing their initial 360-degree assessment of the fire, they located a service line from a power pole to the rear of the home that was burning and ready to fall. The line eventually did fall, and firefighters were kept out of that area of the fireground until Dominion Energy arrived later to deenergize it.
The home is just one of several located inside a fenced family compound. There is a single-wide and a camper also located inside the fence and both were close to the burning home. There is no word if those were damaged by the heat and flames. The one that was destroyed originally belonged to older family members who had established the fenced acreage years ago. The compound has been most recently been inhabited by younger family members who’ve had the property since theirgrandparents passed.
Firefighters didn’t have much to work with when they arrived. So much of the home was already engulfed that they were simply able to pour water on from the outside until the fire was under control. They were having to use water tankers to supply their attack truck because there are no fire hydrants in the general area. There are hydrants on Old Charleston and the tankers carried the water from those to the burning structure.
Eventually the burning house was extinguished. Dominion did arrive and cut the downed line loose from its source so that firefighters could get into the last areas to douse the flames. Fire equipment began leaving the scene around 3:00 a.m.
County firefighters were assisted by medical crews from Lexington County EMS. There were also sheriff’s deputies on scene in case someone tried to pass the fire where crews and other trucks were in the narrow road.
The home was a total loss as a result of the fire. County officials have not determined what caused the blaze.
