Lexington, SC 10/21/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified 2 people who were killed in separate vehicle collisions over the past weekend. One of the collisions happened in the 2300 block of South Lake Drive at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024. This is near Bluefield Road and Palmetto State Mini Storage.
According to Coroner Fisher, Virginia Ellen Burtle, 46, of Pelion was traveling westbound toward Lexington on South Lake Drive while another vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction. At some point, one of the vehicles crossed the center line and the two vehicles collided head-on. Burtle, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead from the injuries sustained in the accident. Two other occupants in Burtle’s vehicle were transported to an area hospital with injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also transported by ambulance.
This collision remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT team.
The second fatal collision was a hit and run that happened in the 100 block of Hartley Quarter Road near Pelion at approximately 7:10 p.m. This was a hit and run collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle.
According to Coroner Fisher, Madelein Lopez-Resendiz, 25, of Pelion was walking westbound toward Aiken County on Hartley Quarter Road when she was struck by a vehicle also traveling in the same direction. Lopez-Resendiz was pronounced dead on scene due to the injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene.
The Coroner’s Office, the SC Highway Patrol, and the SC Highway Patrols MAIT Team are still investigating this collision.
