Lexington County man leads troopers on a high speed chase

Springdale, SC - A Lexington County man was arrested yesterday afternoon after he led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase through parts of Lexington County.
38-year-old Kyle Smith disregarded the lights and siren of a trooper who attempted to stop him on Fish Hatchery Road for driving in the wrong lane. Smith failed to stop and instead led troopers and other officers down Edmund Highway, Airport Blvd., Charleston Highway, and other Cayce and West Columbia area streets. Eventually Smith crashed his car near Cayce and ran on foot. Smith was arrested in the vicinity of the crash after a short foot chase.
Officers say there were no other motorists hurt in the chase and no law enforcement officers were injured. Smith did receive some minor injuries and received medical treatment before being booked into the jail.
Smith has a number of outstanding warrants that may have been his motivation for fleeing the traffic stop. He has been charged with driving under the influence, failure to stop for blue lights, and possession of crack cocaine as a result of the chase.
Smith is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
