National 811 Day highlights digging safety

Cayce, S.C.– National 811 Day is observed across the United States today as a reminder to the public to call 811 so that underground utility lines can be marked before digging projects.

South Carolina law requires homeowners and contractors to call 811 at least three full business days before any digging project, including installing a mailbox or building a deck. After gathering information about the digging site, SC811 transmits the information to utilities in the area and utility locators then mark underground lines for free.

Have the following information ready before calling 811:

• Phone number • Address (including the county) • Is the property inside or outside city limits? • Is the property in a subdivision? • A cross-street name (nearest intersecting street) •The exact area to locate?

• When is the project due to begin?

“Damages can cause service disruptions, serious injuries and costly repairs,” said Felicia Howard, vice president of gas operations for SCE&G “By calling 811, you reduce the chance of causing a damage to less than 1 percent.”
