SCE&G Announces $1.25 Million Support for Customers in Need

Cayce, S.C. (Sept. 26, 2016) – SCE&G today announced a $1 million donation to The Salvation Army of the Carolinas aimed at providing immediate energy assistance to senior citizens, low-income and special needs customers throughout its service territory. One hundred percent of the donation will go directly to help SCE&G customers in need.

The new energy assistance program will be administered by The Salvation Army’s regional offices in the Midlands, Aiken, Charleston, Orangeburg and Lowcountry (Beaufort) areas of South Carolina. The program will be available year-round and provide support for customers with immediate energy assistance needs.

Eligible customers may receive one-time assistance per household per year with an annual cap of $500 per household.

“The SCE&G gift to The Salvation Army is a compassionate and sacrificial contribution that will provide immediate energy assistance to families and individuals in the most need; the generosity of this gift will serve to keep people healthy, safe and remain in their homes,” said Maj. Tom Louden, general secretary of The Salvation Army of the Carolinas. “The leadership that SCE&G has demonstrated in this remarkable partnership is a model of how corporations can impact the community in practical, deeply effective ways.”

SCE&G also announced a $250,000 donation to support Meals on Wheels programs across the state. The contribution will support Meals on Wheels programs administered by Aiken Senior Life Services, the Lowcountry Area Agency on Aging, Senior Resources, and the Trident Area Agency on Aging. In 2015, Meals on Wheels served more than 2.5 million meals to over 21,000 seniors in SC; however, there are hundreds of seniors on waiting lists to participate in the programs across South Carolina.

“This kind of collaborative effort ensures older South Carolinians are able to get the help they need,” said South Carolina Lt. Governor Henry McMaster. “Local volunteers and partnerships between businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies are the key to making sure all of our senior citizens are healthy and happy in their own homes for as long as possible.”

These new partnerships are consistent with SCE&G’s long-term dedication to helping the communities and customers it serves. For the past 30 years, SCE&G and its employees and customers have supported Project Share, a program that assists low-income customers who need help paying their energy bills.

Employees and retirees also established the Good Neighbor Fund to provide financial assistance to needy families facing unexpected tragedies or emergencies, having assisted more than 11,000 families across the company’s service territory since 1982. The company also regularly supports educational, environmental, health care, arts/culture, and community/civic causes throughout the state.
