Foul odor permeating the air near August and Wattling Roads

Springdale, SC - Town officials of the town of Springdale have been receiving reports of an offensive smell in the area of Fat Boys and the Family Dollar store at Augusta and Wattling Roads on Thursday morning. This is in the area that was recently annexed into the city of West Columbia.

According to Jeff Stilwell, Springdale Town Administrator, callers have described the odor as a strong smell of body odor. Callers reported that the smell was permeating the area and did not smell like ethyl met captain. Mercaptan is the agent that is added to LPG and natural gas to make it stink. This is done so that leaks of these volatile gases are easily detected when people smell the stench.

According to fire officials with the city of West Columbia Fire Department, they had not received any calls regarding the smell. Other public safety agencies in the immediate area that we contacted said they were not aware of any situation that was occurring that might negatively impact the health and safety of the citizens or visitors to the area.

If you can identify the source of the foul odor, please notify the Springdale Town Hall at 803 794-0408 or the West Columbia Fire Department at 803 739-6225. In the event of a life threating emergency, dial 911.
