SCE&G Begins Limited Damage Assessment and Restoration Efforts After Hurricane Matthew

Cayce, S.C. (Oct. 8, 2016) – SCE&G crews began limited damage assessment and restoration work to restore power to customers in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. As of 2 p.m. today, there were more than 280,000 outages across the company’s service territory, mainly in the Lowcountry where high winds knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers. SCE&G increased the number of off-system crew members from 250 before the storm to more than 1,000 by Saturday morning. The company also had more than 2,000 SCE&G employees assisting with storm restoration efforts. Aerial assessments and increased ground assessments are scheduled to begin Sunday morning.

“With the storm clearing, customers will begin to see increased traffic of crews working to restore power throughout our service territory,” said Keller Kissam, president of retail operations for SCE&G. “With more than a third of our customers without power, it will be a while before we can provide estimated restoration times. We appreciate your patience and want you to know that we will be working around the clock until power has been restored to every last one of our customers.”

Kissam also emphasized the importance of staying away from downed power lines. Storms can cause tree limbs and entire trees to break and fall, sometimes taking power lines and even meter boxes down with them. Always assume any downed power line you see is live and stay away. To report a downed line, call 1-888-333-4465.
