District Five Instruction Specialists land article in Palmetto Administrator magazine

IRMO, SC - Two Instruction Specialists from Lexington-Richland School District Five will be published in the fall edition of the SC Association of School Administrators (SCASA) Palmetto Administrator magazine. Dian Alston, Instructional Specialist for Elementary Mathematics, and Kayce Cook, Instructional Specialist for Secondary ELA, co-authored the article The Data Team Process: Building capacity with New Teacher.

“This article speaks to the work we have done over the past three years to ensure that teachers new to District Five with two or more years of experience have a smooth transition to the Data Team Process,” Alston said. “This two-day training is imperative as each new teacher becomes an active member of a Data Team at his or her school. When they leave this training, we are confident they have a firm foundation in the process.”

In the article, Alston and Cook describe the history of the Data Team process in District Five and how it has been instrumental in the creation of professional teams of educators who engage in continuous improvement through thoughtful and intentional use of student data. Participants are given in-depth instruction in the five-step process through modeling, as they are shown authentic videos and engage in several collaborative tasks. The culmination of the two-day training is a performance task where teachers plan and present a mock Data Team meeting.

“As first time authors, we were extremely elated when we received word from SCASA’s Palmetto Administrator magazine that we would be published,” Cook said. “We are committed to providing our new teachers with this specialized training as we continue to build capacity for this initiative. District Five is committed to training and building capacity in all teachers that join our team.”

The Palmetto Administrator magazine is sent to over 3,800 South Carolina school administrators including SCASA members and business affiliate members. The magazine is published twice a year and features articles from South Carolina educators.

“We are very proud of the District Five Data Team Process and just as proud of Dian and Kayce for highlighting the great professional development that occurs in our district,” said District Five Chief Instruction Officer Dr. Christina Melton.
