Pelion man and woman seriously injured in ATV crash

Pelion, SC – A Pelion man and woman were seriously injured in an ATV crash on the grounds of Forts Pond Elementary School Saturday evening. Both were transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital by Lexington County EMS.

The pair were on the ATV riding alongside Edmund Highway when the man, who was driving the ATV, cut across the school’s yard toward the dirt portion of Fish Hatchery Road. He apparently did not see the dry storm drainage pond and went off into it at a high rate of speed.

The left front of the machine struck a concrete outfall structure in the pond and both riders were thrown some distance from the mangled ATV. One of them eventually was able to locate a cell phone and called for assistance.

Firefighters from Lexington County’s Pelion Fire Station responded as did an EMS crew and an EMS supervisor from the county. The rescuers quickly stabilized the pair on scene before transporting them to the trauma center at Palmetto Health Richland. The EMS supervisor rode in the ambulance with the crew to assist in the patient’s care because of the extent of the man’s injuries.

Lexington County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated the cause of the crash. They have charged the man with reckless driving because of the results of their investigation.
