Bouknight named 2016-17 Lexington 3 District Teacher of the Year

Batesburg-Leesville, SC - Batesburg-Leesville Middle School Art teacher Amber Bouknight, was named as the 2016-17 Lexington 3 District Teacher of the Year during the District’s annual Teacher of the Year Banquet held on October 27. Amber was selected from the four finalists, including: Melanie Lorick, Batesburg-Leesville Primary; Brandee Quarles, Batesburg-Leesville Elementary; and Jim Desrosiers, Batesburg-Leesville High.

In her fourth year as art teacher at Batesburg-Leesville Middle School, Amber Bouknight share her love of art and making things with her students on a daily basis. Her decision to become an art teacher was because she like art and then found out that she actually liked children too!

Amber’s great contributions to education have nothing to do with the subject of art. As much as she dreamed of becoming a teacher/artist and jet setting to art shows every weekend, she is so glad that she became so much more. She feels that her biggest contributions are the smiles on the faces of her students when they know they are coming to their favorite class of the day; as well as the endless hugs, laughs and life events she had the opportunity to share with them.

The core beliefs about teaching for Amber have evolved throughout the years. She feels that teachers must try new things constantly to come up with the best learning opportunities possible. Four factors she feels are most evident in her classroom are: 1) Positive student-teacher interaction; 2) everyone deserves a second chance; 3) each child is an individual and, 4) learning can be disguised as fun.

Amber, along with the other District 3 finalists, received Chrome Books and carrying cases, engraved plaques and numerous other gifts provided by Lexington 3. Other gifts were provided by Boutique 527, Herlong Chevrolet-Buick, Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology, Julie Kornet, Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative, Oswald Wholesale Lumber, Inc., Shealy’s Bar-B-Que House, Shear Pleasure, Sweet Simplicity, Wiz’s Eatery and Woman’s Society of Batesburg-Leesville.

The South Carolina State Teacher of the Year competition will begin in January 2017. All District Teachers of the Year will submit an online application at this time and then these applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The top; 5 Teachers of the Year will be selected and will then go through the process of determining the next State Teacher of the year.

Congratulations to Mrs. Bouknight and to the Lexington 3 Teacher of the Year finalists!
