Irmo, SC – Irmo Fire District firefighters made quick work of a house fire early Monday morning. The fire was dispatched between 3 and 4 a.m. in the 100 block of Fire Branch Road near the Saluda River and west of Old Bush River Road.
According to Battalion Chief Rusty Jennings of the Irmo Fire District, a neighbor called 911 after noticing fire in the rear of the adjacent home. When the firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the deck of the house was being consumed by fire.
The firefighters pulled a hose-line on the fire and quickly brought it under control. They checked for fire extension to the interior of the house, but found that the fire had been isolated to the deck area.
Chief Jennings said that he believes that the fire may have started in a recreational fire pit that was located on the deck. The home’s owner had used the pit earlier in the day, but felt he had extinguished its coals after dousing it with water prior to turning in for the night.
The deck, approximately 10’ x 10’, and the outdoor furniture on it, were destroyed by the fire. Chief Jennings said that he believed that the damages to the home were less than $1,500.
